Can I create a portfolio documenting real products on the internet?
Hi,
I'm an aspiring technical writer and I'm planning to create my own online portfolio with sample user guides, online FAQ using robohelp, product demo created using captivate, camtasia, troubleshooting guide,how-to article etc. I know about openoffice, sourceforge sites. Those are for phase II. Right now I want to pick a few products on the internet and document them (get the hang of it and then volunteer for real time task). Like I'm planning to create a user guide for Aviary Screen Capture firefox add-on which is available at https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/11587/... Is this allowed or am I doing something illegal and can be sued by the company bcos I have no authority to document their product? My content will be 100% original describing the product...
Sorry for such a stupid question... I'm just a student wanted to make it big
You can document any off-the-shelf product as you see fit. When I write my books (about Captivate for instance), I don't inform Adobe that I'm writing the book or ask their permission. If the program you are writing about or recording or pulling screen captures for is not available for the public, then you're talking about another can of worms altogether.
Do be careful about documenting the processes. If you misrepresent the software or say something negative about the program, you could find yourself in trouble. I tend to just stick to the facts and leave my opinion of features out of my writing.
Good luck to you!
