Writer's Guide to Previewing PDF Files in Outlook 2007
If you are a professional writer, you probably see lots of emails with PDF files attached to them. It is an occupational hazard. After all, at some point in the document creation and review process, we need to see what the document is going to look like in print, and PDFs are ideal for this. I can't tell you how many page proof PDFs I've seen over the years. It surely gets tedious jumping back and forth between Outlook and Adobe Acrobat just to take a peek at the latest PDF that arrived in the mail.
It used to be that you had to save these attached PDFs outside of Outlook, then open them and view them. Not a complex task, but it gets time consuming when you do it as much as we do. That's why I'm so happy that Adobe has created an Outlook 2007 add-in to preview PDF attachments. This great little tool is free, and comes along with current versions of Adobe Reader. All you have to do is be sure that Adobe Reader is installed, then install the Preview PDF add-in in Outlook. There is really nothing to it if you have detailed instructions handy.
When you set up Outlook to use this add-in, you don't have to leave Outlook to preview attachments. Getting this add-in set up isn't hard. All it takes is downloading the current version of Adobe Reader, installing it, then configuring Outlook 2007 to use it. And you've probably already got Reader installed on your machine anyway, which makes the whole process even faster.
Even if you don't normally make changes to the software running on your computer, anyone smart enough to make money writing is smart enough to set this up themselves. I know it is a pain, and distract you from your writing, but the time and hassle you will save in the future make the distraction well worth it.
