How to get my book published?

What is the quickest, easiest, and most effective way to get a book published?

I live in Ontario, Canada and I have a book that I feel could appeal to a wide audience (13 to adult,) and I can market it as either fiction or non-fiction, so I think I have a fairly wide demographic covered. My friend who is an artist has already created a cover and several professional-quality images for it.

I have sent proposals and query letters to any agents or publishers that have accepted online applications, probably at least 20. I only got one "it's just not for us" reply from a senior editor, no one else even bothered replying.

Will I have better success physically mailing to agents/publishers? Where can I get a good list of people I should send to?

Also how can I make them take notice? For being in the business they sure make it hard as hell for even talented writers to make contact with them. I know even LOTR and Harry Potter got rejected, the whole system is just ridiculous.

Get an agent. Rather than dealing with thousands of individual authors, publishers like to deal with just one agent. These agents can help get your book published, but of course they will ask for a percentage - something like 10-15 percent once you are in print. They are definitely worth the money, though. Instead of giving your entire book, write a cover letter with a good outline (and the book below it). You don't need to have the entire book written to get publishers interested. You just need a couple chapters and an outline.
